Ascites
Sometime additional fluid is build up in the abdomen it is called as Ascites. Ascites is also known as peritoneal cavity. In mild cases, this additional fluid may not be simply noticed, but in serious condition, the abdomen sticks out greatly, thus providing simple analysis of ascites. Most common reason for Ascites is Cirrhosis of the liver but some other situations like kidney failure, heart failure, infections or cancer can also cause ascites. Many medical conditions can cause Ascites. But in case of cancer, which is usually seen in women with ovarian cancer and liver cancer. Ascites can also be due to other cancers, which includes mainly colon and breast cancer. People who are suffering ovarian or liver cancer, the fluid hold cancer cells dislocated the normal absorption and production of fluid increases in the abdomen. So that fluid builds up in abdomen and give swollen, and at final stage it gives pregnant appearance. Ascites develop in many people who have liver cancer, as a result of liver failure.
Conventionally, ascites is divided into 2 types:
Transudative and Exudative.
This categorization is depending on the quantity of protein found in the fluid.
A more practical classification has been developed depending on the amount of albumin in the ascitic fluid compared to the serum albumin. This is known as Serum Ascites Albumin Gradient (SAAG).
