<<HOME <<Disease HOMECataractA cataract is an eye disorder. It is clouding of the eye's original lens, which places at the back the iris and the pupil. This lens work is much similar to a camera lens; it focuses light on top of the retina at the back of the eye. Eye focus is also adjusted by lens, so that we are able to see things clearly both close and far away. The lens is chiefly made of protein and water. The protein is arranged in an accurate manner that it keeps the lens clear and allows the light to pass through it. But as age increases, some of the protein may cluster together and start to cloud a little part of the lens. This is start of “Cataract”, and as time passes, it may grow bigger and cloud cover most of the part of the lens, making eyes difficult to see. Cataract is of three types:Subcapsular cataractIt is lens disorder. People, who are suffering from diabetes and high farsightedness or those who are taking strong doses of steroids, are at greater risk of developing a subcapsular cataract.Nuclear cataractIt is most common form of cataract. This cataract develops in the nucleus; the centre of the lens, and main reason of this is natural aging changes.Cortical cataractIt develops in the lens cortex, and steadily widens its spokes from the outer surface of the lens to the centre. Lots of diabetics’ patients develop cortical cataracts.One-Third part of population over the age of 65 is suffering from cataracts. And lots of persons have cataract by the age of 75. Main cause of cataract is aging. Probability of getting cataracts increases as one get older and this is because of the way of living. Chances of cataract are higher for those who smoke or go out in the sun a lot. Till date surgery is the only treatment for cataracts. One should be able to see better after surgery and enjoy life more.
