Transmission of this bacterium occurs directly through faecal-oral contamination or via intake of infected water and food. The disease is considered in its extreme severe form by a sudden start of acute dilute diarrhoea that can result death also by severe dehydration and kidney failure. About 3/4 of persons infected by cholera do not develop any sign or symptoms. Though, the pathogens reside in their faeces for 10 to 15 days and are hut back into the atmosphere, potentially infecting other people. Cholera is an exceptionally dangerous disease that affects any age group. It can kill healthy person within hours. Persons with poorer immunity, like children, malnourished or HIV patients, are at higher risk of death, if infected by cholera. Mainly cholera is spread through drinking water or foodstuff, which is contaminated with the cholera bacterium. Cholera is an epidemic and the key source of the contamination is generally the feces of an infected individual. This disease can spread speedily in region where cleaning management of sewage and drinking water is insufficient. The cholera bacterium may also exist in the atmosphere in coastal waters and salty rivers. The disease is not expected to spread straight from one person to other person; so, normal contact with an infected one is not a danger for becoming ill.
