Causes and Sysmptoms of Amnesia



Any type of disease or injury that stress the brain can obstruct with the ins and outs of memory. Memory function connects lots of different parts of the brain at the same time. Injure or harm to brain structures that shape the limbic system, can lead to amnesia. The limbic system directs our memories and emotions. There are lots of reasons that can cause amnesia and some of them are Severe illness, High fever, Emotional shock, Head injury, Seizures, Drugs, Alcohol-related brain damage, Alzheimer's disease, Stroke, Brain surgery and many more. Causes of neurological or organic amnesia This neurological or organic amnesia caused by brain injury or damage. Possible causes are:

1. Stroke

2. Encephalitis or brain inflammations

It is caused by infection due to virus, such as herpes simplex virus (HSV), autoimmune reaction to cancer in another part of the body.

3. Oxygen deprivation

Any disease or situation that weaken the availability of oxygen in the brain, like respiratory distress, carbon monoxide poisoning or Heart attack.

4. Specific Medications

Specially sleeping drug, ambien. So many people report that they are not remembering any thing after taking ambien (zolpidem).

5. Subarachnoid haemorrhage

Bleeding in between the skull and the brain part. 6. Brain tumour is also one chief cause.

7. Shock Therapy

ECT (electro convulsive therapy) is more popularly known as electroshock therapy. This is a well-established psychiatric cure in which attack are tempt for remedial effect on subconscious patients. Generally used for treatment of depression, schizophrenia, Bipolar disorder and catatonia. Memory loss in this case is nearly temporary.

8. Head injuries

It is most common reason for amnesia. In most cases this type of amnesia is not serious and patient recover under proper treatment.

Causes of functional or psychogenic amnesia

This is caused because of emotional shock, like:
  1. Being the sufferer of a cruel crime
  2. Sexual abuse and Child abuse
  3. Being involved in battle.
  4. Victim of natural disaster or terrorist act and many more…

Symptoms of amnesia

  1. Patient finds it hard to remember new stuff and past stuff.
  2. False memories - these may be either totally imaginary or made up of real memories lost in time.
  3. Clumsy movements, sometimes shivering (Neurological problems)
  4. Confusion or uncertainty
  5. Trouble in recollecting short-term memory
  6. Partly memory loss
  7. Complete loss of memory
  8. Failure to identify faces and places
