The accurate cause of aphthous ulcers is yet not clearly defined. Existing view is that some outside thing has disturbed the body immune system and this results in the growth of aphthous ulcers. Also, about 45% of people who get Aphthous ulcers have a family history of same disease. Scientists have agreed that viruses do not cause them although they are unsure about what does cause them. Some of the probable causes are:
- Specific types of food allergies
- Some bacteria that cause allergic reactions
- The body may attack the usual cells of the mouth due to faulty immune system function
- Insufficiency of Vitamin B, folic acid and iron
- Due to inability to be digestion of some cereals
- Gum injuries.
- Chorine’s disease and Behcet's syndrome are some other autoimmune disorders
- Dentures that don't fit correctly
- At time menstruation and the resulting hormonal alterations.
- Emotional tension or pressure and lack of sleep
- Mechanical suffering
- Because of some specific food items including chocolate
- Some toothpastes brands
- Many ex-smokers find growth of mouth ulcers after stop smoking
- Genetic factor may play role in some cases.
Some important symptoms of aphthous ulcer are:
- Burning sensation or itchiness is the initial symptoms of aphthous ulcer.
- Discomfort or uneasiness in mouth specially during eating
- Circular, white sores with a red boundary can also be seen in the patient mouth
Slowness.
- The lymph nodes will get swelled up.
- Skin wound or sore on mucous membranes of the mouth may occur; in general they are very painful and starts as a red spot or bump.
- Fever may also be occur in some sever cases of aphthous ulcer.
- Painful sores inside mouth, tongue, under the tongue (soft palate), in cheeks or lips, and at the bottom of your gums
