Main cause of Cholera is bacteria called Vibrio cholerae. This bacterium is from the same group (family) of the bacterium, which causes of gastroenteritis. This bacterium enters in human body mainly via drinking water or foodstuff that contaminated with Vibrio cholerae. Other causes of Cholera are listed below:
- Vibrio cholerae virus responsible for Cholera
- Raw fruits and vegetables
- Consumption of ice made from contaminated water
- Contaminated surface or well water
- Grains such as rice and millet
- Raw or inadequately cooked fish and seafood, which has taken from polluted water
- Foods and beverages bought from street vendors
- Vegetables irrigated with sewage water
- Contaminated feces
Symptoms of Cholera
There are lots of symptoms of cholera. Symptoms can differ from mild (initial state) to severe (final state). The key symptoms of cholera are:
- Sudden start of watery diarrhea, approximately 1 litre per hour
- Diarrhea has a "rice water" look (means, the stool looks like water with dot of rice)
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Dehydration
- Diarrhea with "fishy" odor
- Excessive dehydration
- Heart rate become fast
- Dry skin
- Dry mucus membranes or dry mouth
- Glassy eyes or buried eyes
- Abnormal sleepiness or tiredness
- Low urine output
- Abdominal pain
