Causes and Sysmptoms of common cold

More than two hundred different viruses cause common colds. The most known groups of viruses that cause Common Cold are rhinoviruses and corona viruses. Knowing which virus has caused Common cold is not important since its cure does not depend on the kind of virus.

Persons with Common cold are contagious (can transfer the virus to other healthy person) during the initial four days of infection. The virus can be spread in many ways, like when an infected individual sneezes, coughs, or speaks. In all cases fluid droplets containing the virus are released. People close by may breathe in that droplets and may get infected.

Common cold viruses can be spread from one person to another through direct contact, like hand shaking. The common cold viruses can also spread via nonliving things, like telephones, doorknobs, and toys. This means of transmission of virus is common in day-care centres. A kid with a cold may transmit the cold virus to the plaything with which he/she is playing. When other kid picks up the same toy, he/she may also get the cold virus.

It normally takes 1 to 3 days for symptoms to develop. The common cold runs its course in about 5 to 10 days. Common cold viruses attack the tissues that line within the mouth, throat, and nose. This contaminated membrane becomes inflamed or swollen, and cold symptoms start. They include:
  • Dry, rough, or sore throat
  • Runny nose or blockage in nose
  • Sneezing activated by nasal congestion
  • Headache because of congestion
  • Low fever and chills (more frequent in case of children than adults)
  • Earaches, also brought on by the congestion (especially in children)
  • Coughing, generally dry at initial stage, but later can be go with sputum and phlegm
  • Feeling tired and weak
  • Colds may worsen the other situations, like asthma and chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD).
