Causes and Sysmptoms of Constipation



Constipation occurs when the colon soaks up excessive water, or if the muscles in the colon are toning slowly or badly so that the stool moves very slowly and loses more water. Below listed are the most common causes of constipation:

If the sufferer's diet is missing sufficient quantities of fibre

People whose diet includes good amount of fiber are considerably less possibly suffer from constipation. Normally foods low in fiber are highly fatty foods, like meats, cheese, and eggs. If someone consumes them, than also eat enough vegetables, fruits, and whole grains because that are rich in fiber. In simple words fiber encourages bowel movements and control constipation.

If the sufferer is physically inactive, especially the elderly people are at high risk

If someone has had to lie down in bed for a long time, possibly for some days or weeks, his/her risk of having constipation is extensively increased. Aged people tend to have a more inactive life, in comparison of younger people, and therefore they are at higher risk of constipation.

Aging

As people get older their metabolism slow down, That results less intestinal activity. The digestive tract muscles do not work as well as they used to early, because of this constipation causes very frequently.

There are many medications that can cause constipation. The most common ones are:

  • Antidepressants
  • Anticonvulsants
  • Aluminium-containing antacids
  • Calcium channel blocking drugs
  • Diuretics
  • Narcotic drugs (pain killers)

Overuse of laxatives

For regular Bowel movement many people uses Laxatives. After some stage these laxatives become habit. When we become dependent on them there is a major risk of constipation whenever we stop taking them.

Milk

Many persons become constipated when they take milk and other dairy products.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

IBS sufferers get constipation more frequently than rest of the population.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy comes with hormonal changes that can make a woman more exposed to constipation.

Change in regular routine, like when travelling

At time of travelling our regular routine changes. This may affect our digestive system, which sometimes causes constipation. Change in meal timing, sleep and wake up timing all these changes may increase the risk of constipation.

Not drinking enough water (dehydration)

Insufficient drinking of water is one of the main causes of Constipation. Many soft drinks contain caffeine that may cause dehydration and worsen your constipation. Alcohol also dehydrates body, so it should be avoided if you are constipated.

Not going to the toilet when you feel the urge to

Many times we control toilet when we are not at home and would prefer to wait till we get back. Some people may be too busy that don’t get time to go, while some people don't go for toilet because of emotional stress. In case of children, sometime they are too busy in playing that they put off going to the toilet. The longer you hold-up it, the stool will become drier and harder.

Problems with the colon, or rectum

Tumors can squeeze or restrict the passage and cause constipation. Abnormal narrowing of the colon or rectum is one of the key causes of Constipation. Any disorder in colon can cause Constipation.

Some diseases and conditions

Diseases that results to slow down the circulation of the feces via colon, rectum, or anus are more possible to cause constipation. They include the following:

Neurological disorders, Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke, Parkinson's disease, Chronic Idiopathic Intestinal Pseudo-Obstruction, Spinal Cord Injuries, Cancer, Diabetes, Hypercalcemia, Poor Glycemic Control, Hypothyroidism, amyloidosis, scleroderma,and many more

Symptoms of Constipation

Common Symptoms of constipation can include:
  • A feeling that the bowels haven't totally emptied
  • Bloating of the abdomen, and perhaps a "rumbling" noise
  • Hard, dry stools that are difficult to pass or difficulty in eliminating feces
  • Irregular discharge of stools
  • Some bleeding as a result of straining
  • Gas, Acidity and Heartburn
  • Loss of appetite
  • Pain or pressure in the belly
  • Depression
  • Dark circles
  • Dizziness
  • Bad breathe
  • Insomnia
  • Pimples and Acne
  • Coated tongue
