Dropsy is collection of large quantity of extra fluid under the surface of the skin or in some void of the body. Dropsy is commonly known as Edema. Dropsy is most commonly caused by:

Surgery
There is generally some inflammation after a surgical process.

Physical inactivity
Dropsy is more common among persons who do not work out at all, and also walk very little.

Standing or sitting motionless for long time
If you stand or sit unmoving for very long time; then there is high risk of swelling.

Heat
In high temperatures the body is less capable at eliminating fluid from tissues, mainly around the ankles and that causes swelling.

Burns
The skin responds to a burn by holding fluid, which causes localized swelling or Dropsy.

Pregnancy
While pregnancy the woman liberates hormones that support the body to hold fluids. When a woman is pregnant her face will naturally get swell, as well as her lower limbs, hands and feet. Dropsy leads specially when pregnant women body is at rest.

Menstruation and pre-menstruation
Hormone levels vary in the time the menstrual cycle. Before menstrual bleeding start there will be a decrease in the levels of the hormone progesterone that may cause fluid gathering.

Many dieticians say that low consumption of vitamin B1, and inadequate intake of vitamins B6 and B5 may add toward fluid retention.
- Edema or dropsy can also be caused because of some diseases like Kidney diseases, Chronic lung disease, Heart failure, Liver disease, Allergies, Arthritis, Diabetes, Thyroid, Brain tumor, Head disorder
Some main symptoms of Dropsy are:
- Swelling of the skin.
- Skin may become tight and shiny.
- Weight gain or loss
- Hand and neck veins are fuller
- Puffiness of the face, eyes or ankles
- Pain in body parts
- Hard joints.
- Ascites - enlarged abdominal size
- Increased pulse rate.
- High blood pressure
- The skin may retain a dimple after being pressed for about ten seconds
